Education has been hit hard and the results are showing in tuition increases, larger class sizes and low and behold — decreasing academic support. With student numbers dwindling due to higher prices and less financial aid, the students “we” have should be provided with the best support possible to get them to graduation. Is that happening?
I don’t have hard numbers but I know from contact with other service providers and support staff that they are trying to do so much more with so much less. Who will reap the consequences of this short sighted strategy? Students with disabilities who will be attending our institutions in larger numbers and requesting services due to the new DOJ regulations.
Do it faster! Do it more efficiently! And do it with less help!
It will take a village and everyone in the post-secondary institution to provide access to students with disabilities. Come on UDL take hold. Hey ADA let me in. just recently I had a meeting and the term unfunded mandate was used. Seriously, what happened to civil rights! Everyone at the institution must provide access preferably without being directed and stop discriminating in ideas and actions (like thinking you can increase class size in the same room without taking physical access into account).
I thought by now my position as sheriff of acess would be obsolete. What a wonderful world of denial I live in? At this point I am all out of creative ideas but if you would like to share something that IS working for you drop me a line and I will compile and post useful information.
